Synopsis

Braveheart, Avatar, 300, The last of the Mohicans, Apocalypto… Wei’s monumental movie has been compared to all of the above. The film is a spectacular reconstruction with great historical accuracy of a real event that took place in 1930, during the Japanese domination of the Formosa Island (currently Taiwan). For more than three decades, Mouna Rudo witnessed how his Seediq tribe had to endure oppression. They were forced to adopt their invaders’ language and religion and to abandon their own rituals, like hunting and facial tattoos. The Seediq had therefore nothing to lose when Mouna spoke out the first cry of rebellion that would go into history books as the “Wushee Incident”. With 15,000 thousand extras, astonishing special effects, and what could also be the highest number of decapitations ever seen on the big screen (that is the reason why the original version lasts 4 and a half hours), Wei tells the story of a battle between 300 rebels and 3,000 well prepared soldiers; spears and ancient guns against one of the most modern armies of its time; The Warriors of the Rainbow versus the Empire of the Sun.
