Synopsis

Ocaña was a painter and a performer from Andalucía who subverted the Spanish political transition with his urban outbursts in Barcelona. These interventions filled with queerness, criticism, and cries for freedom, where registered in a notorious documentary by Ventura Pons who prefigured most of Madrid’s cultural life. While visiting Berlin in order to promote Pons’ film, Ocaña became Courant’s accomplice, who captured his performative spirit in a Super 8 short film. That is how his destabilizing journey through the German capital transcended, to testify that there was more to Ocaña (who died prematurely in 1983) than his career as an actor in the margins of Spanish film industry. A decade before the fall of the Berlin wall, Ocaña’s transvestite theatricality in that divided Berlin prefigured the cult musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch and its ideas of a “trans” body as a place of political tension. Serge Daney was part of the film crew and one of whom was constantly celebrating and rooting for Ocaña to melt the cold city with his histrionic talent.
