Synopsis

The titles in Yulene Oleizona’s films are a number. In Fogo –the name of an island located north east of Newfoundland, Canada; a deserted place with an infinitely mysterious landscape– the chosen territory again determines a group of scenes and a story as minimum as it is universal. Like any good architect, Olaizola is, first of all, a good interpreter of the territory; afterwards she writes, shoots, builds.

A man knocks on the door of a house and announces: “The last ferry leaves the day after tomorrow”. Like some of the people living in Fogo, Norm must make a decision: to leave or to stay. It’s clear that surviving in the island is not simple: you live in a sort of zero degree of existence, and even then the sense of rooting and belonging is more powerful than any potential migration to a more pleasant world. Olaizola will only capture the noble resistance of the locals. And there’s the almost deserted island: the secret, omnipresent, and lonely star of the film, a geography that’s essential to literature and cinema, the dialectic counter side of civilization, the place where men believe they can start over, or where they’re just confronted with the nakedness of their origins and fate.
