Synopsis
“If only misfortune didn’t taste so good, My God“ says an old and big man to the camera as he walks through the emptied rooms of the apartment where he lived all his life and fed on his own bad luck until he became a ghost of Vienna’s intelectual scene. Or rather almost a ghost, because the man who laments is Peter Kern, an actor, scriptwriter, and filmmaker of more than a hundred films in the last forty years, many of them regarded among the most influentional ones in the elusive (at least down here) Austrian film production. From that sort of awkward position, Veonika Franz and Severin Fiala’s documentary stands firmly in the present day –driven by the single and essential decission of never turning their camera off– and documents the everyday life of a tormented yet still active man, who is volatile (untreatable, judging for a few moments of documentary splendor) yet simply brilliant. Thanks to that rejection to become a sad story about a life that is no more, Kern (the film and the man) turnes into a direct testimony on the power of creativity. PM
