Synopsis
“The Artist Is Present” is the name of performance artist Marina Abramovic’s retrospective in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It’s also a definition of what Marina practices: art, using her body as work material. This shocking lady from Montenegro turns her stunning humanity and cinematographic face into the elements that get displayed: walking on the Great Wall of China until she finds her love and artistic partner and then ends the relationship. Flagellating herself. Bumping against other bodies. Or, simply, what she does in this New York exhibition, where sits and waits around to face her audience. This documentary works as a promoting piece that shows the expansion of the limits of what is considered to be contemporary art, but also –unavoidably, since this is Marina– her own personal story. The fact that two people who didn’t know each other are confronted and generate emotion without speaking: that’s what Marina Abramovic is able to achieve, and that’s what this film effectively features.
