Synopsis

“The stories are the ones of Western soldiers. Not the civilians’ stories”. Those are the words of Nagieb Khaja, a Danish journalist of Afghan origins who knows this piece of information has two heads: one related to the stories that occupation armies decide to tell, and another one related to the fact that it’s pretty unsafe for journalists to move outside Kabul. Based on this fact, the filmmaker/journalist travels to Laskar Gah in South Afghanistan, and delivers cell phones with video cameras to dozens of people living in small rural towns, so they can document their everyday life. The result is hugely powerful, because it combines the expected roughness with an unexpected happiness. The boundaries, the need to break them, and the impossibility of challenging them. Lives ruled by fear and the wish to overcome it. My Afghanistan manages to make cinema reveal us, with luminous spontaneity, a fragment of life we were barely ready to sense. MP
