Synopsis
This film’s plot unfolds before us as it gets told by a grandfather. It’s the story of Maki, a kid from Sudan who manages to escape from some evil slave traders, and meets a giraffe. Zarafa (the Arab word for giraffe) is the story of the friendship between Maki and that beautiful animal. But it’s also the story of an extraordinary trip from Africa to France, a journey filled with dangers, villains, friends, animals, loyalty, cruelty and wit. The beautiful city of Alexandria, in Egypt, the danger of Turkish invaders, various adventurers, an indomitable pirate woman, and the evilness of a French king, are just some of the many elements that shape this adventure, which takes place in the early 19th century, back when there was still a lot of world left to be discover. And these elements are presented with traditional 2D animation, the kind that has the special warmness of a bedtime story. JPF
