Synopsis

It’s hard to pinpoint a genre for The King of Comedy, since it represents Scorsese’s view on celebrity and its collateral effects. Static, contemplative, and gifted with a both enthralling and virtuous setting, the film features successful talk show host Jerry Langford –Lewis’ first serious film role in over three decades–, an object of obsession for crazy autograph-hunter and aspiring comic Rupert Pupkin (De Niro). A caustic portrait of the alienation produced by fame, the film features its two main actors in an admirable state of concentration. Even if the old school represented by Jerry Lewis ends up bringing more intensity without the exaggerated resources of De Niro’s Stanislavskian methods (a true act of justice). Before casting Lewis, Scorsese considered Johnny Carson –the true inspiration of scriptwriter Paul Zimmerman–, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and even Orson Welles. None of them would have looked as bitter or desperate. Because in The King of Comedy (Lewis himself admitted to this on more than one occasion) Jerry Langford is Jerry Lewis. MP
