Synopsis

In the beginning of the film, Hannah Arendt –a 20th century professor, philosopher, and sharp intellectual– is getting ready to attend –sent by The New Yorker– the trial of Nazi official Adolf Eichman in Jerusalem. Although the film is a fiction about Arendt’s life, many of the images from the trial are actual documentary footage, and through its truly shocking power Von Trotta reveals a decision of not reconstructing that which seemed impossible –the figure of a genocide leader– and effectively articulates those famous archive images while facing us with Eichman himself.

When she returned to the US after her stay in Israel, Arendt wrote her most controversial treaties about the position of Jews during the Holocaust, and created the notion of banality of evil. Although at times the film might feel somewhat introductory, it is a very well crafted biopic that manages to portray the life of this brave woman, while going through some of her most brilliant ideas.
