Synopsis

In April 1945, around thirty thousand survivors from Nazi concentration camps arrived to the port of Mälmo, in neutral Sweden. The process of physical and psychological recovery started there: the ex-prisoners were fed, dressed, and taken care of so well that many of them wondered if they might were hallucinating it. Getten reconstructs this fragment of history with the testimonies of three characters: Irene, who got there with her mother when she was eight; Ewa, the daughter of an activist in the Warsow camp uprising who gave birth in 1944 in the Ravensbrück camp; and Joe, who lost his entire family but regained the hope of someday forming one, thanks to the fifteen year-old Red Cross volunteer he became friends with. Armed with impressive footage from endless local news broadcasts, Harbour of Hope rises on the record of endless unanswered questions, indelible memories of horror, and that intermittent light that shined on those who went through the Holocaust and found the way to keep going, without ever forgetting the past.
