Synopsis

In Marçal Forés’ debut film, the level of bewilderment caused by the appearance of a teddy bear that thinks and speaks in perfect English in the middle of a fairytale forest among the logical deer and proper birds, is both monumental and defining. The bear cub is named Deerhof, and he’s the best friend of the main character in this story: a teenage Catalonian boy named Pol. Deerhof and Pol wander through the woods, converse, play in a rock band together (the bear is the drummer!), and hide from people: from Pol’s schoolmates in the British institute he attends; from the girl he likes; and specially from his big brother, who lives with him and has become a police man. As far from Ted’s recklessness as any talking-teddy-bear-film could be, Animals captures the borders between fantasy and reality with an estranged naturalism -a luminous and tense calm that covers more throbbing mysteries and tragedies than laughter. A coming-of-age story, Animals talks about what we sacrifice in order to grow up; of how much are we willing to give up so we can be like other people wants us to; and of how much we need to endure before we can find something that is similar to happiness.
