Synopsis

Patrice Chéreau was filmmaker, stage director, and actor. This multifaceted artist began his career in theater at 22 years old when he directed the Théâtre de Sartrouville before working at the Piccolo Teatro di Milano. He has staged several operas amongst which are Rossini’s L’Italienne à Alger, Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Wagner’s Tétralogie and Berg’s Lulu (in collaboration with Pierre Boulez), and Berg’s Wozzeck and Mozart’s Don Giovanni (with Daniel Barenboïm). In 1982 he was named director of Théâtre des Amandiers in Nanterre. Around that time, he helped discover author Bernard-Marie Koltès, whose plays he directed. Chéreau also directed plays by Genet, Marivaux, Heiner Müller, Chekhov, and Shakespeare.
