The ICP Orchestra, which has been at the forefront of European jazzfor almost 30 years, comes to Buenos Aires led by charismatic drummer Han Bennink, who will also play in concert with ICP’s legendary members Michael Moore and Ernst Glerum –amajor milestone for the City.FlavioBoltro, a worthyrepresentativeof thefamous Italian school of jazz trumpeters, will close the Festival together with one of Europe’sbest new talents: pianist Eric Legnini. Guitar virtuosos Jonathan Kreisberg andwith Sylvain Luc will hit the stage too: the American playerwith his trio,and the Frenchman with Jean-Michel Pilc. Tim Berne will appear with Ernesto Jodos’s trio. There will be solo piano performances by Frank Carlberg, Guus Janssen and Leo Genovese,andNew York Voices member DarmonMeader will treat us to a repertoire of standards. Also, the BAJ will offer a bonus free concertoutdoorsfeaturing Brazilian artists: the awe-inspiring Rosa Passos, who captivated audiences in 2008, and the amazing Banda Mantiqueira, which rocked the house last year.

A section that has become a true hallmark of the BAJ.It is practically an internationally unprecedented and unparalleled experience involving local and guest musicians,some very seasoned, others very young. They all come together for the first timewith their own talent, audacity and generosity to share the experience of improvisation with no safety net and with the audience as witness, judge and primary beneficiary of this singular event. These encounters forge new lasting artistic relationships. This year, the section welcomesThelonious Club – a strategic hub for the local jazz scene–which,jointly with the section’sclassic venueCafé Vinilo,will host many livecollaborative performancesfeaturing artists of various nationalities, many of whom will get to meet each other only a few moments before stepping on stage.

Since its first edition, the BAJ has turned to La Trastienda Club to stage those projects thatdeserve a special placebecause of the elaborate and hard work put in as well as their importance:album debuts, commissions or the performance of the Manuel de Falla Conservatory ensembles. Musicians debuting their latest releases this yearincludedouble-bass great HoracioFumero; Roxana Amedwith Frank Carlberg, who comes to play the tribute album to Alejandra Pizarnik live; guitarist Alejandro Demogli, who recorded his latest work in New York; and singer Barbie Martinez, one of the most important voices on the local scene. Additionally,in amilestone for the Festival, Leo Genovese was commissioned to pay tribute tothe music of Luis Alberto Spinetta, while theNoneto del Conservatorio Manuel de Fallahas prepared to perform music by saxophonist Tim Berne, under his direction.

The Terraza of the Centro Cultural Recoleta andthe Auditorio del Parque Centenario will feature some of our brightest local talentas well as international artists, such as Danish guitarist Jakob Bro, the Frank Carlberg Trio, Brazilian bassist Rogério Botter Maio’s trio and the Pentajuma Juan Manuel Toro Quinteto from Colombia. Other acts include theEpumer-Machi-Judurcha trio, singers such as Graciela Cosceri and Déborah Dixon, Nico Sorín’s octet, Paula Shocron and her new trio, very young artists like singer Jazmín Prodan, up-and-coming guitaristsRodrigo Agudelo and Lucio Balduini, and an established musician like trumpeter Gustavo Bergalli. But there’s more: Delfina Oliver with the Artistry Big Band and other big bands including Walter Rinavera’s andBrazilian A Saidera;guitarists Marcelo Gutfraind and Valentín Reiners, pianist Esteban Sehinkman, and bassistsArturo Puertas and Demian Cabaud; as well as saxophonist Carlos Michelini, who will premiere his latest album.

The Auditorio El Aleph of the Centro Cultural Recoletaseems to be especially designed for the unplugged philosophy. With extraordinary acoustics and an intimate atmosphere, the auditorium has an apse for performances that need no microphones or wires.This section offers unique all-acoustic concerts: piano solos, duos, trios and quartets, with nothing whatsoever between the instrument’s own sound and the audience’s ear. Featuring solopiano concerts in a variety of styles as only offered by Juan “Pollo” Raffo, NicolásGuerschberg, Alan Zimmerman or Marco Sanguinetti; three duo performances by seasoned musicians such as PepeAngelillo and Pablo Ledesma,Marcelo Mayor and Pablo Motta, andHernán Ríos and Facundo Guevara;the exotic sound of the Bosphoru sDúo, and the charismatic trios led by Darío Iscaro and by up-and-coming Julián Midón.

Jazzologíatop

For twenty-nine years, the Jazzology series, directed by Carlos Inzillo, has been showcasing artists of popular music and especially of jazz, every Tuesday at El Cultural San Martín. The concert program curated by Inzillo brings a wide variety of musicians to the stage: from traditionalists to modern jazz performers, from young talents to legendary figures of the local and international scene. They have all performed in this highly popular free concert series. The Jazzology stage is a vital element in the cultural life of the City, and its inclusion in the BAJ is not only a homage to its director and curator, but also a recognition of the great efforts put in by the cultural center. This year, it will feature Rosario-based JazzTrio Contemporary Music Group, the gipsy jazz of Chemanush, the Antigua Jazz Band, the Louisiana Jazz Band, Opus Cuatro, BrazoFuerte All Stars and such projects as Mainstream 6 and Cabaret Berlín.

There is no jazz festivalwithout a jam, the true institution of the genre that combines music, food and socializing, because at some point in the night music is an excuse to get together to have a drink, exchange views and enjoy a relaxed end to the workday. Every year the audience, who feels the same way and celebrates it, awaits the moment to come to La Trastienda Club, where stellar master of ceremoniesGillespi, with whom swing and good vibes are guaranteed, accompanied by his band, will welcome local and international guests in the mood for some jamming on the nights of Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Anything can happen at these spontaneous gigs; the only sure thing is the participation of host musicians and major guest stars.
