Nicolás Ospina Trío

Pianist Nicolás Ospina, born in 1980 in Bogotá, Colombia, was one of the sensations of 2008 due to the release of his first album as a leader: Entre espacios (PAI Records). This album earned him the mention of Best Newcomer 2008 by local newspaper La Nación. He studied at the Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá and also in Spain, where he did classical piano and harmony for three years and a half with Albert Balcells at Ángel Soler’s school, and arranging, harmony and jazz piano at the Taller de Músics in Barcelona with Joan Monne, Marti Ventura and Joan Díaz. He also attended a seminar on orchestration with Luis Verges and Joan Albert Amargos. He participated in the Havana Jazz Festival. Back in Colombia, in 2004 he graduated with honours in piano performance at the Universidad Javeriana, where he later taught piano lessons. He has appeared at most jazz festivals in Colombia alongside renowned musicians of that country, such as Juan Sebastián Monsalve and Tico Arnedo. Once settled in Buenos Aires, he began teaching audio, harmony, music appreciation, arranging, piano and overtone singing at the Escuela de Música Contemporánea. In 2006 he formed his own trio, with which he performs his own compositions combining elements from jazz, Colombian folklore, contemporary music and experimental music. The trio is completed with Ezequiel Dutil (see his details on p. 44) and Alejandro López, one of the most active drummers of the new generation. After graduating from the Escuela de Música Contemporánea, Alejandro performed with Mariano Otero, Diego Schissi, Juan Pablo Arredondo, Patricio Carpossi and Rodrigo Domínguez, among many other musicians.
