Film and Jazz Centro Cultural Recoleta / MicrocineThe ex drummer of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, whose album Spectrum influenced an entire generation of musicians, is still touring the world. This documentary follows him around Brazil, where he conducts a clinic with musicians from the favelas (shanty towns), as well as throughout an emotive experiment in Switzerland where music is used as a means of communication with a group of autistic people. At an age when others are retiring, Cobham is still alive and kicking, playing and exploring.

When Adrián Iaies called to invite me to write a tribute to Astor Piazzolla’s work, along with the joy and pride the invitation meant, aroused the inevitable question: is it possible to do anything with Astor’s music that wouldn’t sound unnecessary? His music has the balance and self-sufficiency of any great work.
My first romance with Piazzolla’s music occurred twenty years ago. Ten years later I submerged myself into his music with the self-imposed challenge to emerge on the other side enlightened, without getting lost in his marvelous labyrinth.
Never heard his recordings since. It seems my romance with his music is signed by each decade...
Today I visit Piazzolla’s world again to attempt reinvent myself through his music, surrounded by eight amazing musicians, to tribute him in which I think is the best way to honor a man who believed in doing: by keeping in doing, always pushing forward.

Imagine the sound
Film and Jazz Centro Cultural Recoleta / MicrocineThe first full-length film by the director of Grass was this documentary portraying the present time of the musicians who emerged with the wave of free jazz in the early 1960s. Besides the customary interviews, which combine anecdotes and political and aesthetic stands, what really matters are the performances, with an eccentric Taylor banging the piano as if it was a wild animal and he, its tamer.

The jazz baroness
Film and Jazz Centro Cultural Recoleta / MicrocineShe didn’t sing or play any instrument, and yet her name has become a legend: Baroness Nica von Koenigswarter was a friend and patron of numerous jazzmen, including Thelonious Monk –who dedicated his song “Panonnica” to her – and Charlie Parker, who died at her apartment. Nica was white and came from a very wealthy family, the Rothschilds, but devoted her life to helping black musicians in times of bebop and racial segregation. Her grandniece Hannah unveils family secrets and anecdotes of the New York jazz scene in this documentary entirely dedicated to her memory.

Broadway in Satin: Billie Holiday Revisited
Some music never dies; it just gets better with time. So it is with the popular songs of America written between 1920 and 1950 – born in the Broadway musical and the Hollywood films and adorned with silky arrangements by the crooners of the period, they went on to form the bedrock of today's pop music, not to mention the fertile breeding ground for jazz improvisation. These songs are the perfect vehicle for a voyage of exploration between the two worlds. Daniel Yvinec continues his rereading of the great American standards with Broadway In Satin, evoking the memory of Billie Holiday, 2009 marking the 50th anniversary of her untimely death. A wonderful but tormented performer, this great artist interpreted popular songs with such power and originality you could swear she'd written them herself. Keeping intact the marvellous contours of the original melodies, the ONJ will perform a selection of songs associated with the star (God Bless the Child, I'm a Fool to Want You, Strange Fruit…), painting them in unusual orchestral colours and taking them into hitherto unexplored territory. Alban Darche's bold yet subtle arrangements make judicious use of the orchestral resources (prepared piano, electronics, toys...) to project a new light onto these melodies. Rooted in classical and film music as well as in jazz, pop and electronica, these transfigured versions will be performed by two unusual and contrasting voices and personalities: Karen Lanaud, whose precious talent is waiting to be discovered, and Ian Siegal, the charismatic English blues singer. The pre-recorded voice of the extraordinary storyteller Archie Shepp will punctuate the programme with extracts from Billie's own autobiography.
With its original staging, Broadway In Satin is a show in its own right, where tradition meets modernity, charting its path through a multitude of genres, like Tom Waits in top hat and tails conducting a Tim Burton soundtrack arranged by Gil Evans and Ennio Morricone.
