JORGE NAVARRO TRÍO

Jorge Navarro was born in Buenos Aires. His remarkable career began in 1958, playing with the Swing Timers. He is considered an emblem of a whole generation of Argentine jazz musicians. His albums have been released in Argentina and the world. Over the span of his career he has toured Europe extensively and performed alongside the world’s leading jazzmen. In 1995 he was appointed Guest Member by Unesco’s International Music Council. Alongside the late renowned pianist Baby López Fürst, he created a season of performances that ran for five consecutive years and saw the recording of two albums. In 1996 he was artistic director of the first International Jazz Festival in Punta del Este, Uruguay, which featured big names such as Clark Terry, James Moody, Paquito D’Rivera and Luis Salinas. In 2000 he took part in the International Jazz Festival of the Seven Lakes (Argentina), sharing the stage with prominent artists. In 2003 he was awarded Best Jazz Artist by local newspaper Clarín. In this edition of the Festival, Jorge Navarro is presenting Por todos estos años, his latest production, along with eminent partners. In his trio, Carlos Álvarez’s youth and Eduardo Casalla’s knowledge and experience make a perfectly balanced combination.
Carlos Álvarez was born in Spain thirty years ago. He is a double bassist, composer and teacher. As a composer, he has two albums under his belt: Viejo Cactus (PAI Records) and Carlos Álvarez Quinteto. In addition to leading his own trio, he has performed and recorded with, among others, Alex Acuña, Jarmo Savolainen, James Moody, Andrés Boiarsky, Juan Cruz de Urquiza, Ligia Piro and Gustavo Bergalli. As a teacher, he is on the faculty of the Centro de Altos Estudios Musicales (CAEMSA) and the Córdoba Jazz Camp.
Eduardo Casalla is one of the essential names in the history of Argentine jazz. His drums have accompanied such figures as Enrique “Mono” Villegas, Lalo Schifrin, Chivo Borraro and brothers Barbieri. He is one of the founders of the band Swing Timers and has recorded or performed with Clare Fischer, Paul Gonçalves, Willie Cook, David Kikoski, James Moody and Wild Bill Davison. He is a widely renowned and esteemed teacher. Some of his former students are currently professional musicians in Argentina, France and the United States. Simultaneously, he leads his own ensembles, always surrounded by young musicians. With his quartet he recorded Improntas (2001), which was released in Europe and Japan. In October 2007 the City Legislature declared him Distinguished Personality of the Culture of the City of Buenos Aires.
