Angelo Debarre & Ludovic Beier Trío's biography

Angelo Debarre & Ludovic Beier Trío

This trio constitutes one of the most exquisite and fresh expressions of the powerful manouche tradition, bound to the legacy of the great Django. From Gus Viseur to Jo Privat, from Ferré to Reinhardt, accordion and manouche guitar have made an excellent couple. It will come as no surprise, then, that the gathering of Ludovic Beier and Angelo Debarre, with the added plus of an impeccable rhythm section led by Tchavolo Hassan, should turn into a manouche extravaganza. Virtuosity, accordion fluency, accuracy, colour and the instantly identifiable personality of the guitar: the fusion of these results in sheer brilliance.
Following the creation of his first quintet, Debarre, a Parisian born in 1962, became one of the quintessential figures of the then famous Parisian cabaret La Rue Fleury, and made numerous tours with his gipsy and manouche style. He feels at ease in both repertoires, be it alongside Pedro Ivanovitch, Arbat, Sarga Campos, Bratsch, Boyan Zulfikarpasic, Xavier Navarre or Biréli Lagrène, to name only a few of the big names of those genres.
“[...] His technique is remarkable and unique. The power of his left hand is impressive. His right hand, with the plectrum, is simply unreal. He manages to keep amazing us every time. He takes great risks and never makes mistakes [...]. Also surprising is his wonderful vitality in playing the guitar [...] To put it in a nutshell, Angelo Debarre is undoubtedly one of the best representatives of jazz manouche on the acoustic guitar.” (Fred Loizeau - French Guitare magazine.)
Ludovic Beier, at the early age of 29, has already shared the stage with the leading figures of the genre popularised by Django Reinhardt. A jazzman to the core, Ludovic Beier has been an aficionado of the west coast sound ever since his childhood days in Auvers-sur-Oise.
He played in the United States with Joe Lovano and David Sánchez, among others, and he participated in the Django Reinhardt Proyect at the Jazz at Lincoln Center. Back from a tour with Angelo Debarre and the great saxophonist James Carter, he has just appeared at the Carnegie Hall alongside Toots Thielemans.
