Orchestre National de Jazz

Presents Broadway in Satin / Billie Holiday Revisited
The Orchestre National de Jazz, created in 1986 on the initiative of the French Ministry of Culture, is visiting Buenos Aires for the first time. The orchestra’s prestigious career has earned it a place among the most respected ensembles in Europe; its avant-garde, adventurous profile matches perfectly well that of its director: Daniel Yvinec. The nomination of an artist with such a freewheeling and remarkable career to create and defend a project as audacious as it is demanding is a sign of ONJ’s ambition to evolve, secure in its orchestral heritage, to reaffirm its status as a creative laboratory by enriching its missions and taking them to a wider audience.
Daniel Yvinec imagines his orchestra as being carried forward by ten young emerging talents with original and adventurous profiles. Unearthing new talent has always been one of the ONJ’s strong points, and these musicians, multi-instrumentalists for the most part, are also composers and arrangers keen to explore collective music making in all its forms. To this end, over and above the orchestra itself, in whose projects all will play a key role, Yvinec will also be presenting their work in smaller units (solo, duo, trio...), providing an opportunity for each and every one to reveal their talents to the world at large.
It is as an inventor of fertile crossovers and as a unifying force that Yvinec will work to bring his creations to life, calling upon the assistance and inventiveness of numerous partners and writers, not to mention prestigious invited guests.
In his first season as a director, Yvinec has devised a programme paying tribute to one of the essential artists, not only for jazz but also for the music of the twentieth century: Billie Holiday.
