HERNÁN MERLO

It isn’t an overstatement to say that most of the double bass players of the current jazz scene have at one time or another been disciples of Hernán Merlo. This double bassist and composer was born in 1957. He studied double bass at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música Carlos López Buchardo with Enzo Raschelli. In 1981 he travelled to the United States to complete his studies with Joel DiBartolo at the Dick Grove Music Workshop in Los Angeles, later to take lessons with such prestigious double bassists as Charlie Haden, Mark Helias, Michael Formanek and Scott Colley. He has been active on the local scene for the past twenty five years, playing with the most prominent local jazz musicians of different generations, as well as many international artists in their visits to the country, including Joe Pass, Barry Altschul, Chris Cheek, Conrad Herwig, Ingrid Jensen, Farred Haque, Sid Jacobs, Renato Chicco, David Kickoski and Sam Newsome.
As a soloist, he has performed at the main venues in Argentina and also in New York and Barcelona. With four albums as a front man under his belt, he has also participated in the recordings of Ernesto Jodos, Carlos Lastra, Lito Epumer, Enrique Norris, Quintino Cinalli, Patricio Carpossi, Juan Pablo Arredondo, Guillermo Romero and Diego Urcola, among others. As a teacher, he boasts an eminent career. In 1988 he was appointed tenured professor at the Escuela de Música Popular de Avellaneda and he is a member of the faculty of jazz studies at the Conservatorio Superior de Música Manuel de Falla.
