Biography
Ben Monder's biography
Ben Monder is one of the most active New York musicians of the past twenty-five years. The owner of a very personal style, he was summoned to record and perform live by numerous top-notch artists, including Jack McDuff, Marc Johnson, Lee Konitz, Kenny Weehler, Tim Berne, Guillermo Klein, George Garzone and the Carnegie Hall Orchestra.
At present he is a regular member of María Schneider Jazz Orchestra and legendary drummer Paul Motian’s octet, and he also performs internationally with his own quartet and trio, and in a very original duo project with vocalist Theo Bleckman.
He has appeared on over a hundred albums as a sideman and released four as a leader. Oceanía, Excavation, Dust and Flux. He has conducted clinics and workshops around the world, and served on the faculty of the New England Conservatory from 2002 to 2005.
Critics have stated that Monder’s style bears some hallmarks of his predecessors such as Jim Hall and John Abercrombie, even though, as pianist Frank Kimbrough rightly said, “Ben has practically created his own musical language”.
