Sofía Rei Koutsovitis

Singing in Spanish, Portuguese and English her own compositions fusing traditional South American rhythms and contemporary jazz harmonies, Sofía Rei Koutsovitis has become, in a very short time, one of the most versatile and sought-after singers of the current New York music scene. She has recorded, performed and collaborated with musicians and bands such as John Zorn, Bobby McFerrin, Maria Schneider, Geoffrey Keezer, John Scofield, Lionel Loueke, Alcatraz, Russ Ferrante (Yellow Jackets), Bob Moses, Aquiles Báez, Samuel Torres Group and Avantango (Pablo Aslán). She has appeared at renowned venues like the Kennedy Center in Washington, the Lincoln Center and the Blue Note in New York, the Chicago World Music Festival, Aspen Jazz Festival, Lima International Jazz Festival (Peru), Ibero-American Arts Festival (Puerto Rico), Cité de la Musique (Paris, France) and the Barcelona Jazz Festival, among others. Throughout 2007 she toured Europe and the United States with Maria Schneider’s big band and took part in the première of “Cerulean Skies” at the prestigious Crowned Hope Festival in Vienna. In May 2008 she appeared at the Carnegie Hall alongside Bobby McFerrin, delivering Instant Opera, a completely improvised opera. In December 2009 Sofía will be one of the four singers/songwriters chosen to create a project as a part of the famed Jazz Gallery’s New Voices Series. Sofía has just finished recording an album with the vocal quartet Mycale, to be featured in the new Book of Angels: Masada Book 2 by composer and producer John Zorn. Her debut album Ojalá was chosen among the Top 10 of 2006 by the Jazz Journalists Association. She has just recorded Sube Azul, recently released in the States and Europe on the renowned label Harmonia Mundi (World Village).
