Unanimous press acclaim for Fred Hersch

Unánimes elogios de la prensa para Fred Hersch

On Saturday, the major Buenos Aires newspapers published highly favourable reports of the concert by Fred Hersch and his trio which marked the official opening of Buenos Aires Jazz.09. Under the headline “The trio’s art at its finest”, Clarín reads: “Seldom does Hersch play what could be clearly described as an accompanied melody; he rather shares out democratically between both hands, and even splits all up with the right amount of sweetness and violence, yielding something which at times bears some hallmarks of Anton Webern”, according to critic Federico Monjeau.

In turn, La Nación featured an article headlined “Masterly performance by pianist

Fred Hersch”. In the words of Pablo Gianera: “Hersch works at the core of the repertoire. In his solos, his adventures don’t go too far, that is, he never moves completely away from the piece. But there are very few musicians who can achieve so much, in such a clever way, playing within the format”. In Página/12, Diego Fischerman also praised the performance of the New York pianist and composer and the trio’s synergy. “When he plays in trio, as he did in the extraordinary opening of Buenos Aires Jazz.09 –at Teatro Alvear–, the sound is more like a trio plus the three possible duos”.
