A very special woman

Una mujer muy especial

The closing of the season “Film & Jazz” features the screening of “The Jazz Baroness” (United Kingdom, 2009), a documentary by Hannah Rothschild on the baroness Nica von Koenigswarter and her life as a patron and emotional support of the brilliant and volatile Thelonious Monk, as well as of Charlie Parker (who died in her apartment, while watching TV) and other jazzmen. The film, never released in Argentina, screens today at 5pm at the “microcine” of the Centro Cultural Recoleta. Admission is free.

In the documentary, Rothschild –Nica’s grandniece– reveals family secrets and anecdotes of the New York jazz scene. The film features actress Helen Mirren’s voice narrating this singular story as well as archive footage and interviews with members of the noble family, with jazz historians and such jazz legends as Sonny Rollins, Quincy Jones, Thelonious Monk, Jr., Roy Haynes, Curtis Fuller and Clint Eastwood. And, as if that weren’t enough, the amazing Thelonious Monk Quartet can be seen playing classics like "Straight, No Chaser," "The Bolivar Blues" and "Nutty”.

A real gem.
