Bernardo Monk

Born in 1975 in Buenos Aires into a music family, Bernardo Monk began to study saxophone at age 14. His first teachers were Eduardo de Luca, Victor Skorupski and Carlos Lastra. In 2000 he won a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he received the Charlie Parker Scholarship and the Woodwinds Department Achievement Award and graduated Summa Cum Laude in Jazz Performance in 2003. Monk had the privilege of studying with such great jazz musicians as Joe Lovano, Hal Crook, Jerry Bergonzi, Charlie Banacos, Ed Tomassi, Jeorge Garzone and Phil Wilson.
His professional career in Boston featured recordings and performances with Oscar Stagnaro’s band Perú Mestizo, Tito Puente Jr., Marta Gómez and Ryles Jazz Orchestra, among others. In 2002 he founded his quintet as part of the music and dance show MassTango. As a soloist, he released two albums: Ponele la firma (2006) and Estación Buenos Aires (2004). He has been recently commissioned by composer Osvaldo Golijov to record the theme song for Francis Ford Coppola’s film Tetro.
