International concerts

Fred Hersch in Buenos Aires for the first time. One of the greatest contemporary jazz pianists will be displaying his talent as a soloist and member of his trio. And he will also be sharing the stage with local musicians. France is doubly represented: firstly, with the Orchestre National de Jazz, which, with their nearly thirty years of avant-garde career, bring along an outstanding tribute to Billie Holiday. And secondly, with Angelo Debarre’s manouche guitar and Ludovic Beier’s accordion in a performance where the spirit of Django Reinhardt will surely be present. The passionate, fiery Spanish jazz in Carme Canela’s Catalan voice and her group with special guest Ben Monder and Jorge Pardo’s sax and his trio, distilling sheer swing and flamenco. The purest New York sound from Steve Cardenas’s guitar and the new Latin American jazz from Chile, Ecuador, Brazil and Uruguay.

Orquesta Nacional de Jazz (Francia): Broadway in Satin: Billie Holiday Revisited

Place Teatro Coliseo

Orchestre National de Jazz presents
Broadway in Satin: Billie Holiday Revisited

Some music never dies; it just gets better with time. So it is with the popular songs of America written between 1920 and 1950 – born in the Broadway musical and the Hollywood films and adorned with silky arrangements by the crooners of the period, they went on to form the bedrock of today's pop music, not to mention the fertile breeding ground for jazz improvisation. These songs are the perfect vehicle for a voyage of exploration between the two worlds. Daniel Yvinec continues his rereading of the great American standards with Broadway In Satin, evoking the memory of Billie Holiday, 2009 marking the 50th anniversary of her untimely death. A wonderful but tormented performer, this great artist interpreted popular songs with such power and originality you could swear she'd written them herself. Keeping intact the marvellous contours of the original melodies, the ONJ will perform a selection of songs associated with the star (God Bless the Child, I'm a Fool to Want You, Strange Fruit…), painting them in unusual orchestral colours and taking them into hitherto unexplored territory. Alban Darche's bold yet subtle arrangements make judicious use of the orchestral resources (prepared piano, electronics, toys...) to project a new light onto these melodies. Rooted in classical and film music as well as in jazz, pop and electronica, these transfigured versions will be performed by two unusual and contrasting voices and personalities: Karen Lanaud, whose precious talent is waiting to be discovered, and Ian Siegal, the charismatic English blues singer. The pre-recorded voice of the extraordinary storyteller Archie Shepp will punctuate the programme with extracts from Billie's own autobiography.
With its original staging, Broadway In Satin is a show in its own right, where tradition meets modernity, charting its path through a multitude of genres, like Tom Waits in top hat and tails conducting a Tim Burton soundtrack arranged by Gil Evans and Ennio Morricone.
