David Xirgu

David Xirgu was born in Badalona into a highly musical family, and thus grew up surrounded by jazz, Catalan folklore, soul, funk and zarzuela.
He began studying piano at age 10 at the Conservatorio Superior de Música del Liceo. He also studied drums, at first on his own and later on in schools of modern music (L’Aula and El Taller).
From 1985 onwards he founded and was member of numerous ensembles, including the Lluís Vidal Trio and the Orquestra de Cambra del Teatre Lliure, and long-standing collaborations with Carmen Canela and Iñaki Salvador. Since 1995 he leads his own band, with which he recorded two albums. David can also be heard in over fifty jazz recordings, sharing the studio with Tete Montoliu, David Liebman, Mark Feldman, Horacio Fumero, Sean Levitt and David Mengual, among others. He has also had the honour of performing alongside renowned musicians like John Abercrombie, Vince Mendoza, Dave Liebman, Fred Hersch, Mark Feldman, Norma Winstone, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ben Monder, Guillermo Klein, Art Farmer, Charles Tolliver, Dave Schnitter and Mulgrew Miller.
