Biography
Singer and composer Sofía Rei was born in Argentina. She began singing at the
Colón Theater Children’s Choir. She studied at the Carlos López Buchardo National
Conservatory of Music and earned a master’s at the New England Conservatory (Boston, United States). She has sung at the Montreal Jazz Fest (Canada) and at New York’s
Blue Note and Village Vanguard, among other venues. In 2007, she toured Europe
and the United States as the vocalist of Maria Schneider’s big band and participated
in the premiere of Cerulean Skies at the Crowned Hope Festival in Vienna, for the
250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth. In 2008, she was featured with Bobby McFerrin in
Instant Opera, a fully improvised opera based on the story of the Tower of Babel, at the
Carnegie Hall. She was a founding member of John Zorn’s Mycale, and participated in
his series Masada. She sings in Aurea, a project led by pianist and composer Geoffrey
Keezer. Sofía is currently a faculty member of the vocal department at Berklee College
of Music (Boston). Her solo album Sube azul (World Village-Harmonia Mundi) won an
Independent Music award in the category Rhythms of the World. At this year’s BAJ, she
will perform De tierra y oro, an album of songs inspired by her travels around the world. On this occasion, she will be accompanied by Bernardo Monk (saxes), Sebastián
Espósito (guitar), Mariano Martos (bass) and Facundo Guevara (percussion).
