Synopsis

Any contemporary artist who wonders about what is political today understands the growing importance of the means of circulation and intervention. But the Russian group Voina (which means “war”) understands how essential is the location of their artistic actions, and that’s why they usually don’t take place in a museum or any other place where you would expect to see a work of art, but rather in places where the institutional powers won’t be expecting them. The powerful and delirious quality of their actions finds in Andrey Gryazev’s documentary camera an exceptional drive belt and ideological empathy. Voina believes (and Gryazev agrees) that the new ways of artistic activism can be nothing but political, and so every situation –as crazy as they are effective and provocative– is a moment of artistic enjoyment and reflection. That tension or continuity is what gives this unleashed and brutal film its explosive and novelty quality which gives cinema its immediate and urgent reach.
