Born in Berlin in 1942, she studied Literature in Munich and Paris. She starred in several films by R.W. Fassbinder and debuted as director in The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum (1975; with Volker Schlöndorff). She later directed several films, including Rosa Luxemburg (1986), The Promise (1994) and Vision (2009).
