Twenty-four years in a row. No other music season of the city of Buenos Aires, whatever the genre, can boast such an uninterrupted history. This proves at least two things:
Carlos Inzillo’s talent, passion and ability to attract audiences and how amazingly fertile Buenos Aires has always been in supplying jazz musicians to feed and guarantee the longevity of Jazzología. Only for this special occasion, to render the tribute even more special, the season will leave its permanent home (Centro Cultural Gral. San Martín) to occupy the roof terrace of the Recoleta Cultural Centre.
“It is a great honour, as well as a huge responsibility for us who make Jazzología, in its 24th anniversary, to have been invited by Adrián Iaies to cover the Classic Jazz section of the Buenos Aires Jazz 2008. No other music season of the city, whatever the genre, can boast such an uninterrupted history. Perhaps no other artistic expression can mark their evolution and growth so clearly in such a short period, virtually a century. The aesthetics that shapes Jazzología refers to the first five decades of the genre, that is, the first half of the past century, with an aim to offering a non-formal history which nonetheless marks the movements of that brilliant initiation stage, analysed within its context. Starting from the premise that the classicism is ‘the reference’, ‘what provides answers for men of all time’, there will be ragtime, blues and boogie-woogie in their piano forms but also the great traditional bands, ranging from Dixieland to swing, from mainstream to the romantic style of the France Hot Club, all performed with the unique style of Argentinian performers and international guests of great renown. What counts is the music speech that the genre has not lost and that represents its essence: improvisation, that is, the impromptu creation, the unexpected…
All there’s left to do is repeat the words of the great French intellectual and jazz lover, Jean Paul Sartre, which is Jazzología’s motto since its early days: ‘Jazz is like bananas –it must be consumed on the spot’. And attend the concerts with mind and heart wide open, to confirm that the whole thing began way before the great John Coltrane.”
