Synopsis

Andrei Ujica’s second film split the Nineties in half. Still regarded as one of the most important documentaries of that decade, Out of the Present aims at the sky and keeps going up to board the MIR space station and depict the collapse of the Soviet Union from way up high, through the figure of cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev, who stayed in orbit during the whole conflict. The most impressive thing in Ujica’s film is not just the use or archive footage, the power of its own images (for which a 35mm camera was placed in orbit for the first time in history), or its social background, but the fusion of all that through an editing work that –because of its tricky lightness– seems to have been made in zero gravity conditions. Like someone once wrote: Out of the Present defies categorization and can be watched on any number of levels: informative documentary, trippy visual orgy, tangential political commentary on Russia, or philosophical meditation.” We should add another level: a Romanian remake of 2001 A Space Odyssey.
