Synopsis
There probably isn’t another filmmaker who has re-made the same film so many times. Well, Hawks became obsessed with mass reproduction of the film essence he called “bigger than life” in the epic triad Rio Bravo, El Dorado, and Rio Lobo (one more perfect than the next, regardless which ones you choose to compare). But Hong Sang-soo turns repetition into not so much an art form as a sincere alteration of that bigger than life thing: far from being smaller than life, each Hong film is an exploration –almost like Jules Verne anticipating future forms, using genre as a catalyst– of the human being’s bane; a funny bane, perhaps. Back to Hawks now: with Hahaha, Hong acknowledges that the screwball is doomed to be not so much the classicism people refer to –more out of Pavlovian impulse than insight– and rather an atomization of modernity that reduces it to ridiculous yet moving rubble. Luminous rubble, as imperfect as those zooms, as bestial as the reactions between Hahaha’s couples, omnipresent like the Tonyeong Sea. Summer-spirited and with a touching eye, Hahaha tells us we’re one more imperfect than the next, regardless which ones you choose to compare; and also that this is something that provokes laughter and, through exploration, creates cinema.
