This must be a unique case, or at least the most singular one. Bafici screens a documentary about a working filmmaker whose films were never programmed in the festival. Giuseppe Tornatore has tons of fans thanks to a film some people adore: Cinema Paradiso, an Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film. At the same time, Cinema Paradiso is kind of the black sheep for many cinephiles, who hate it for the excessive way –to say the least– it appeals to emotionality and, on top of that, the fact that it does so on behalf of its love for cinema. Anyway, Bafici programs this documentary on Tornatore, a very attractive portrait of the work and life of someone who thinks and experiences cinema with a passion and intensity worthy of emulation. This film by Luciano Barcaroli and Gerardo Panichi runs on a fast pace with a diversity of resources, and goes deep into the work of a director who knows where he wants to go with his art. You don’t have to be a fan of his filmography to enjoy the love for cinema Tornatore displays in this documentary, which will not necessary turn the unconvinced about the merits of his films, but will convince you of his genuine decision of making them the way he did, and still does.
