FIRST-CLASS FIRST WEEKEND

PRIMER FIN DE SEMANA DE LUJO 12 Mon 2011

The first weekend of the Festival – Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 26 – offers a rich and varied menu of options. Alexis. Una tragedia greca, by the Italian company Motus, at the Teatro Regio; Yo no soy bonita, a solo performance by Spanish Angélica Liddell at the Sala Casacuberta of the Teatro San Martín; the choreographic series Gnawa, Preludio a la siesta de un fauno (Prélude à l’aprés-midi d’un faune) and Seis danzas (Sechs Tänze) presented by the Brazilian São Paulo Companhia de Dança. What else can you ask for to start living the experience of FIBA’s eighth edition?

THE DARK SIDE OF CHILE

EL LADO OSCURO DE CHILE 11 Sun 2011

“These days prior to your arrival have been awful, full of rehearsal and preparation. And at this zero hour of the night I wonder why humans do not come with a switch to be turned off.” This is the beginning of Iris’ tempestuous, delirious monologue – she is the wife of a Chilean army captain and, more important, the lover of the dictator who freed the country from the Marxist threat. Any similarity with reality it is not purely coincidental in this play by Chilean Alejandro Moreno, one of today’s most prolific and acclaimed Latin American authors. La amante fascista will be performed on Tuesday 27, Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 at the Teatro Margarita Xirgu, in San Telmo (Chacabuco 875). There are tickets available for the three shows, at very affordable prices (starting at 30 pesos), which can be purchased on this website or in person today, Sunday, and every day at the Teatro San Martín (Av. Corrientes 1530), and from Monday to Friday at Casa de la Cultural (Av. de Mayo 575), from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in all cases.

FIRST-CLASS CHOREOGRAPHY

COREOGRAFÍAS DE PRIMERA 10 Sat 2011

The prestigious company Sao Paulo Companhia de Dança arrives in Buenos Aires to perform three shows – Gnawa, Sechs Tänze and Prélude à l’aprés-midi d’un faune – during the first weekend of the Festival – Saturday, September 24 and Sunday, September 25 – at 9 p.m. at the Teatro Presidente Alvear. The attractiveness of the show is enhanced by the choreographic creations of Nacho Duato and Jiri Kylián, who are two of the world’s major choreographers. Tickets for both days can be purchased, at very affordable prices (starting at 30 pesos), on this website or in person: this weekend and every day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Teatro San Martín (Corrientes 1530), and from Monday to Friday, same hours, at La Casa de la Cultura (Av. de Mayo 575).

OUTRAGE AND ACTION

INDIGNACIÓN Y ACCIÓN 09 Fri 2011

In Alexis, una tragedia greca, the death of Alexandros Andreas Grigoropoulos (Alexis), a 15-year-old young protester murdered by the Greek police during a demonstration in December 2008, intertwines with Antigone in a mirror game that the Italian company Motus will stage in the first weekend of the Festival – on Saturday, September 24, and Sunday, September 25 – at 8 p.m. at the Teatro Regio (Av. Córdoba 6056, a few yards away from Dorrego avenue). Tickets, at very affordable prices (starting from 30 pesos), can be purchased on this website or in person, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Casa de la Cultura (Av. de Mayo 575, from Monday to Friday) and the Teatro San Martín (Corrientes 1530, every day).

BLOWS OF REALITY

A GOLPES DE ¿REALIDAD? 07 Wed 2011

The body answers to the crisis. “In this comedy of mistaken identity, solvency and insolvency are the same. Activity and asceticism, the difference between real and fictitious values becomes obsolete. This is why this tragedy is developed between two poles: belief and reality, both of them simultaneously leading to catastrophe,” wrote playwright René Pollesch about his “Ich schau dir in die Augen, gesellschaftlicher Verblendungszusammenhang!” (I’m Looking into Your Eyes, Social Context of Deception!), a provocative theater piece to be staged at 8 p.m. on Friday, September 30, and Saturday, October 1, and at 5 p.m. on Sunday 2, at the Teatro Presidente Alvear. Tickets, starting at 30 pesos, can be purchased on this website or in person, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at La Casa de la Cultura (Av. de Mayo 575, from Monday to Friday) and at Teatro San Martín (Corrientes 1530, every day).

THE GREAT STORYTELLER

EL GRAN RELATOR 07 Wed 2011

French actor and film, theater and opera director Patrice Chéreau arrives for the first time in Buenos Aires to perform, on two nights in a row at the Sala Casacuberta of the Teatro San Martín, his one-man show “El gran inquisidor,” based on a fragment from Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov. Tickets remain for Saturday, October 8, at 8 p.m.: they can be purchased on this website or in person, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at La Casa de la Cultura (Av. de Mayo 575, from Monday to Friday) and at the Teatro San Martín (Corrientes 1530, every day).

POETIC VIOLENCE

VIOLENCIA POETICA 06 Tue 2011

"In a misogynous, androcentric and patriarchal society, women are divided into three kinds: virgins, mothers and whores. My body turns into an assault against society. My body turns into a protest. It is an act of disobedience. I punish my own body to disobey. I harm myself to turn against the wounds I get as consequence of the role we have been imposed since birth. I use poetic violence to defend myself from real violence.” These words belong to Angélica Liddell, a Spanish notable and provocative actress, director and playwright who arrives in Buenos Aires to present “Yo no soy bonita” on Saturday, September 24, and Sunday, September 25, at the Sala Casacuberta of the Teatro San Martín. There are tickets available for both presentations, which can be purchased on this website or in person, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Casa de la Cultura (Av. de Mayo 575, from Monday to Friday) and at the Teatro San Martín (Corrientes 1530, every day).

ESTRELLA IS A REAL STAR

ESTA ESTRELLA ES UN LUJO 05 Mon 2011

A prominent last name in the international programming is that of Flamenco legend Morente. But Estrella Morente – the one in question – is much more than just the daughter of the great Enrique, who died this year – a sad piece of news for the music worldwide. She is one of the major singer songwriters of a new generation that combines an ancient tradition and powerful vocals with the language of her time. The voice lent to Penélope Cruz in a scene of the film “Volver,” by Pedro Almodovar (where she sings, precisely, the creation by Gardel and Lepera) can be enjoyed in Buenos Aires, on Monday, September 26 at the Teatro Coliseo. Tickets, starting at 30 pesos, are on sale on this website, or can be purchased in person from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m at the Casa de la Cultura (Av. de Mayo 575, from Monday to Friday) and at Teatro San Martín (Corrientes 1530, every day).
