DOUBLE FEATURE BY CALDERÓN

DOBLE PROGRAMA DE CALDERÓN

Chilean Guillermo Calderón, one of most poignant authors and directors in Chile’s contemporary theater scene, brings to this edition of the Festival the double bill of Villa + Discurso, two unique yet complementary short pieces which will be performed back-to-back with a brief intermission. Today, Saturday, and tomorrow will be the last days to enjoy these stage productions performed by actresses Francisca Lewin, Macarena Zamudio and Carla Romero, at Parque de la Memoria (Av. Costanera Norte - Rafael Obligado 6745, on grounds adjacent to the University of Buenos Aires campus). The plays’ theme and performance space are very much related: "I’m sure that the intellectual and emotional connection will be more likely than in other places,” the author said with regard to this.

Discurso deals with an imaginary farewell speech from former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet. Their voices intermingling and their eyes looking at the audience, the three actresses wear a simple light jacket and a presidential sash as they speak. In Villa, they are dressed in jeans and t-shirts, as members of a “special commission” that has to decide what to do with Villa Grimaldi, a former torture center run by military during Pinochet’s dictatorship. Amid high expectations and after Calderon’s success in FIBA 2009 – he earned wide recognition for his stage plays Neva, Clase and Diciembre – the play has completely sold out.
