Film season

Also offered by the Buenos Aires Jazz 2008 will be a film season with the aim of delving into the inherent relationship between image and sound. The season will take place at the Recoleta Cultural Centre, from Thursday 16 to Sunday 19 at 6 pm.

Oscar Alemán, vida con swing (Hernán Gaffet, 2002) 95'
  • When delving into the history of Argentinian jazz, we come across several legends of this music genre. Hernán Gaffet leads the journey into some aspects –both known and unknown– of one of them: guitarist Oscar Alemán, his life and music, from his neighbourhood to Josephine Baker’s orchestra in Paris.
Walter Malosetti: Solo de guitarra (Daniel Gagliano, 2004) 55'
  • Daniel Gagliano humbly approaches his admired Walter Malosetti, the legendary jazz guitarist. His bosom friend takes us along the history of one of the most revered names of the local jazz scene.

Anita O’Day: The Life of a Jazz Singer (Robbie Cavolina, 2007) 90'
  • Robbie Cavolina, Anita O’Day’s manager, is the right person to tell about the intimate, at times troubled world of one of the great jazz singers.
    Premiered in the United States only a few months ago, it has reaped the praise of the audience and the critics alike.

  • Miguel Faria Jr. pays homage to Vinicius de Moraes, singer, composer, poet, one of the cornerstones of bossa nova.
    Fiction and reality combine in this tribute to one of the biggest names of the Brazilian culture of the twentieth century.

Space Is The Place (John Coney, 1974) 85'
  • Piercing the space is this spaceship propelled by jazz music, in an attempt to rescue the black race by taking it to a safer planet. Sun Ra and his Intergalactic Solar Arkestra lead the mission in this unusual, surrealistic cult movie.
Sun Ra: A Joyful Noise (Robert Mugge, 1981) 60'
  • Robert Mugge introduces us to Sun Ra and the musicians of his Intergalactic Solar Arkestra. A documentary which is packed full of curious reflections but, above all, that is a fascinating insight into Sun Ra and his music.
