International concerts

The opening concert will be that of the legendary Randy Weston. His presence is a tribute to the memory of Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk, who are present in Weston’s music as the deepest Afro-American root. An indulgence for the audience. The closing show will be presenting Rosa Passos, one of the greatest singers of Brazil. Her distinguished presence in Buenos Aires Jazz 2008 is a way of joining the worldwide celebration for bossa nova’s 50-year anniversary, a genre whose perfume spiced the entire popular music of the second half of the twentieth century, and jazz in particular.

In addition to these gems, the Festival boasts the presence of the Tolvan Big Band, an eminent jazz band all the way from Sweden, a country where jazz is the official music. The new tendencies will have their place with Donny McCaslin and the amazing Guy Klucevsek/Alan Bern duo. And, since there’s more to Latin jazz than what goes on in the tropics, we have invited the CMS Trio –Javier Colina/Marc Miralta/Perico Sambeat– to deliver not only their jazz flavour but also their Caribbean music and flamenco touch.

Each guest artist will be preceded by a local artist who will officiate as host. With that always delicate matter of welcoming we entrusted, on the one hand, Juan Carlos “Mono” Fontana and Mariana Baraj, with their constantly surprising and magic solo sets, and on the other, Fernando Tarrés and Argentos, whose meticulous works are the perfect display of our jazz and folklore rhythms. They will all be opening the game for our international guests.
