Agustín Moya

Biography

Composer and saxophonist Agustín Moya emerged from the Conchalí Big Band in 1997 and drew inspiration from hard bop musicians. He began playing the horn, but after taking classes with Carmelo Bustos, he settled on the sax. With Sebastián Jordán, he started a musical collaboration that aimed for bringing the tradition of the trumpet-tenor sax duo back. In 2005, he played the tenor sax in the Ensamble Quintessence, and in 2006, he served as a soloist and composer in Pulso, recording Litio in 2008 with Vera, Quevedo and Baeza. After a stint in New York, where he studied with sax player Dave Liebman, he returned to enlarge his quartet to an acoustic quintet, with Quevedo on piano. With them, he recorded Infinito (2009), an album with a contemporary production. In contrast, Moya also leaned towards the roots of jazz with a classic quartet made up of pianist Joel Holmes and the rhythm section of Eduardo Peña (double bass) and Félix Lecaros (drums). They recorded a live album at Thelonious Club, Espacio elástico (2011). Moya has played with Drew Gress, Luis Perdomo, Melissa Aldana, Ernesto Jodos, Pipi Piazzolla, Dave Santoro and Ana Tijoux. He has played at the Providencia International Jazz Festival, the Estadio Nacional and the Teatro Caupolicán, and toured in Argentina, Dominican Republic, Brazil and South Korea. At this year’s BAJ, he will perform with Milton Russell (double bass), Raimundo Santander (guitar), Joel Holmes (piano) and Félix Lecaros (drums).
