Synopsis
This first fiction by Albetrto Morais –following his documentary about filmmakers that was screened in Bafici a few years ago– chooses a paused and minimal tone in order to address issues that would otherwise overwhelm us with their weight: memory, past mistakes, and the guilt for the things that never happened. Miguel (Carlos Álvarez-Novoa) is an old man who just buried his wife. Ignoring his children’s advice and with the stubbornness of those who won’t assume that time has passed, Miguel goes out on a trip to find not so much a place as rather a specific moment of his past related to the Civil War. The camera observes him from outside, without knowing what he’s thinking but still aware of his dreams: those trance moments when Miguel travels to the past by just finding a print in the landscape. Morais exposes the paradox: as he alienates himself from the real world, Miguel will find the necessary sanity to assess who he was and who he could have been, understand the meaningless nature of the world, and find a balance to stay alive a bit longer.
