Synopsis
What did WWII decorated pilot Wendell O. Pruitt had in common with democrat representative William L. Igoe from the early 20th century? Apart from being born in St. Louis, Missouri, they both had the “honor” of being posthumously selected to name the most ambitious and failed public housing complex in US modern history. Designed in the 50’s by Minoru Yamasaki –who was later responsible for the Twin Towers and the World Trade Center–, the Pruitt-Igoe was born as a modern urbanism wonder at the service of the people, in which 33 eleven-stories buildings would solve the demographic boom in the poor neighborhoods of a growing metropolis. But soon enough, the stylized utopia of “vertical neighborhoods for poor people” fell apart, and was transformed into a ground zero for a whole city’s heavy crime. Documented and relentless, The Pruitt-Igoe Myth is the rise-and-fall story of yet another great American dream.
