Synopsis
Coming of age stories (you know, those emotional dramas that feature characters growing in order to quit stinking of teen spirit) usually have a limited base and geography. But Lebanese Rania Attieh and American Daniel García’s first film keeps the same emotional coordinates but alters the map in more than one way. The background (the film’s rhythm, power, and texture for social relationships) is provided by Trípoli, while the social drama comes from a forty-some son (that’s how he defines his identity) who one day is suddenly abandoned by his mom. And although it feels less obligated than in the US model, the mandatory parade of secondary characters begin, including a kid and a prostitute who will change the life of this character who is forced into growing up. And yet everything is narrated in a heartfelt way that is not corny or emotionally intruding, and knows –like in a mom’s cooking recipe– how to make a warm and guiltless mix of melancholy, comedy, nostalgia and irony.
