Synopsis
“At once primitive and sophisticated, hilarious and poignant, spontaneous and studied, frenzied and languid, crude and delicate, avant and nostalgic, gritty and fanciful, fresh and faded, innocent and jaded, high and low, raw and cooked, underground and camp, black and white and white-on-white, composed and decomposed, richly perverse and gloriously impoverished, Flaming Creatures was something new under the sun. Had Smith nothing other than this amazing artifact, it would still rank among the great visionaries of American film”. These lines open the book On Jack Smith’s Flaming Creatures and Other Secret-Flix of Cinemaroc and are the most concrete of the hundreds J. Hoberman wrote about the Holy Grail of experimental cinema. The publishing of the first book that translates the work of this fundamental critic to Spanish (we’re not talking to fans of the art of criticism only) gave way to revisit, again with Hoberman, an absolutely new, wild, intelligent, and invincible film. A film just like Hoberman.
