Synopsis
A photographic exhibition about war crimes in the Reich’s Eastern front during the World War II. Beckermann jumps in time and doesn’t show the images, which are as cruel as one can imagine and focuses on the public, especially the Austrian war veterans who fought for the Wehrmacht once the Reich annexed the country in 1938. The monologues of the men in front of the camera, their conversations and discussions faced with the panels, they all form a contradictory collage of portraits: there are witnesses, victims, skeptical family members and a large number of distracted veterans who claim they never saw anything out of the ordinary. In their mouths, concepts like “following orders”, “full history”, “communist danger” or “partial view on things”, sound painfully close. A very simple idea that creates a relentless film.
