Synopsis
“After travelling around with a big camera, I walk around on my street with a little video camera”, says Beckermann in the last days of the millennium. The goal: portraying everyday life in Marc-Aurel-Strasse, in downtown Vienna, where she lives and works. The stars are her neighbors, especially the ones we see arguing every morning on the street: a Jewish shop owner who is the only member of his family that survived the Shoah; the Iranian hotel owner across the street, who claims Viennese people are more open “only in theory”; the regulars at Café Salzgries, who miss the recently deceased owner who used to invite them to chat and get to know each other. Around the middle of the film, Jörg Haider, the leader of the xenophobe right wing, gets closer to power and stirs the debate, causing, paradoxically, the union of differences.
