Synopsis
Canijo finds the perfect metaphor: a father and his daughter paint the walls over and over again in the house he intends to move back to after being away for many years. The reality within those walls is the same, but the new loud, exuberant colors try to hide all the history they contain to the point of turning them into a glimpse of the present, capable of disguising the tragedy gestated there for two women, a mother and a daughter. Everything is false, or at least presented with a strange glow, clashing against the usual way Lisbon’s clear reality is presented thanks to the special light that shined on it. Filha da Mãe distances from the common places that make the famous Lisbon imagery of trams, cafes and viewpoints. The one that was built, paradoxically, by those filmmakers who came to Portugal in the 80’s fascinated by the city, the people, and the cadence of the language: Wim Wenders, Raul Ruiz, Alain Tanner and Werner Schroeter, who also helped a few local filmmakers learn the trade as assistant directors. Among them, João Canijo, of course.
