Synopsis
When his father commits suicide by throwing himself under a truck due to his enormous gambling debts, the only option the main character in About July has is to work for the mob. Being just 14 years old, the only connection he ever had with this underworld was through the movies, so he needs to rehearse in front of a mirror before his first day of work as a doorman in an underground gambling joint. His new character is useful for playing the tough guy at home beating his mother and grandmother, but isn’t good enough when a straight cop raids the place, arrests him, and subjects him to a brutal interrogation. Meanwhile, his father’s coffin (and corpse) is still in the living room, because of a tradition that forbids burying the dead in July. This bizarre and agitated month in this preadolescent’s life is what Wei decides to portray in his first film. Filled with keen observations and a dark sense of humor, About July is crossed by a dirty realism that is far from the heroism and glamour we are used to see in gangster movies.
