Synopsis
With an open lack of interest for defending the artistic and importance value of one of the figures from 20th century counterculture that has been more than present in cinema, this new documentary about WSB seems to go deep into his human and social side. So much so that the film unfolds rapidly, taking the shape of a sort of biography/anecdote collection with comments from that impossible constellation of friends that surrounded the author of Naked Lunch –which is also a listing of some of the key names in the development of contemporary literature, cinema, and music. And this simple and choral aspect –which reaches its many peaks with Genesis P-Orridge, Patti Smith, Allen Ginsberg and JOHN WATERS, in capital letters since he’s without a doubt the best possible commentator a documentary can feature– is what takes Leyser’s exploration from a famously chaotic territory to a new, fresh region that might never have looked so human before.
