Synopsis
On February 2010, an earthquake hit central Chile with a mark of 8.8 in the Richter scale, killing 500 people and tearing down 500.000 buildings. Three weeks later, Torres Leiva’s camera registered for eight days (this film is part of the project 8.8, by Chilean artist Fernando Prats) the remains of a territory and a society who are still in a state of shock. The fascination certain images produce –those that replicate miniatures on a perfectly scaled model, and those which seem as abstractions of a reality that ceased to exist– goes along with the terrible feelings one experiences when witnessing so much pain and destruction. Like in those early films from the last century (which Torres Leiva had already used as inspiration for his short Obreras saliendo de la fábrica), these scenes can’t help but stand in front of those fragments and wait for some answer, some sign of life to emerge so they can be reborn. And so, away from any melancholy or denunciation, the images and sounds reveal a different approach from where to discuss a nation’s identity.
