Synopsis
Free Land is both a documentary on the history of the United States and one about the filmmaker’s family history. “Freeland” is also the last name of Minda Martin’s father, and seems to have been passed on through generations. and not without irony, by displaced men; pilgrims who dwelled from one state to the next looking for a chance to survive, with no land or home, and often in extreme poverty. Through an amazing visual and sound edition of diverse materials (family letters and photos –even from their Cherokee branch–, found footage, state archives, and recent personal videos) Martin probes into the particular meanings of words like land and freedom. And she focuses on those who result from combining the two: the unfulfilled promise of an America as “the Land of the Free”, and how that myth was geographically and ideologically transferred to the least favored as a sort of belief in a “free land”, but has only intensified social inequalities and contradictions.
