Synopsis
With that rigor for documentary filmmaking of his Bafici audiences are well aware of, in his new film Rosa von Praunheim follows “the Bahnhof Zoo boys”, a group of young men who works as prostitutes, they’re only way out from a past of poverty and family abuse. Far from the common places of simplistic denunciation, Rosa’s camera focuses on just a few cases, triggering questions that are never definitely answered, because some things can’t be answered. And so, the lives of Ionel, Nazif, and Romica –three immigrants who got to Germany escaping from either war or ruthless recession in Romania and Bosnia– and Daniel –the closest thing to a main character the film has– all articulate a thread in which the sociological field study bounces against straight camera confessions without ever compromising the film’s subtle storytelling. In the conjunction of those two perspectives is where Rent Boys strength resides, and turns it into a documentary exercise as simple as heartbreaking.
